JAPAN: Heathcare: Actelion announces launch of Tracleer for PAH treatment
Approved on April 11th by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. It was granted today full reimbursement status.
Actelion followed by announcing the launch of the product in Japan. The target end user treatment cost of $60,000 (Actelion will receive 85%-90% due to distribution through their own affiliate). This is a huge increase over the US treatment cost of $35,000 which analysts had used for rough guages at possible pricing scenarios.
The launch is in-line with company guidance, and pricing is a surprise upside. Japan currently has the second largest PAH population (behind the US). The main treatment currently used is Flolan which ranges up near $200,000 per patient/per year.
Actelion will release results from Clinical Studies over the next 18 months (Build I and Build II clinical data should come 4Q05/1Q06). and if results are positive, there should be a siginificant change in the PAH treatment market with Actelion a prime beneficiary. (www.actelion.com) / Reuters: ATLN.S / Target: 150 $SFr
*Actelion has also been in the News as Pfizer on June 6th announced it received US FDA approval for its drug Revatio. The drugs will most likely be used in combination so downside from direct competition is limited
